Stay legally compliant with professional-grade Hull Identification Number (HIN) decals. Durable, reflective, and built to meet federal and state requirements — applied in minutes, lasting for years.
Understanding HINs is the first step to staying compliant. Here's everything boat owners need to know about hull ID numbers and why they're essential.
A Hull Identification Number (HIN) is a 12-character alphanumeric serial number permanently assigned to every motorized vessel manufactured or imported in the United States after November 1, 1972. It is the boat equivalent of a VIN on a car.
Federal law (33 CFR Part 181) requires the primary HIN on the starboard (right) side of the transom, within 2 inches of the top. A duplicate (secondary) HIN must be in a hidden interior location as anti-theft protection.
A valid, legible HIN is required for registration, insurance, and sale of your vessel. Boats with missing, damaged, or illegible HINs may be impounded, fined, or denied coverage by insurers.
The 12-character HIN encodes the manufacturer ID (3 chars), serial number (5 chars), and date of manufacture/model year (4 chars). Example: ABC12345D303 — each segment carries specific regulatory meaning.
Understanding and following Hull ID Number regulations protects you from fines, impoundment, and insurance issues. Here's what the law requires.

"I order HIN decals in bulk for boats that come through our marina needing compliance work. The quality is consistent, delivery is fast, and the reflective option is a game-changer for boats that go out at night. Highly recommend."

"As a marine surveyor I see HINs in every condition imaginable. I now refer clients to Boat Decal Shop specifically because their decals meet federal readability standards right out of the package — no guesswork."

"I was stressed about my upcoming title transfer because my HIN was barely readable. Ordered, customized, and received my new decal in 3 days. The adhesive is incredible — it's been through two Pacific Northwest winters and still looks brand new."
