Marine-grade vinyl decals engineered for California's Pacific coast conditions — UV-resistant, saltwater-tough, and fully compliant with CDFW regulations. Serving SF Bay, SoCal, and Northern California boaters.
California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) enforces specific format, sizing, and character standards for all vessel registration numbers displayed on California waterways.
All specifications above reflect current California Fish & Game Code §680–680.9 and CDFW Boating & Waterways guidelines. Requirements are subject to update — always verify with the current CDFW Boating Registration portal before purchase. Our team keeps our templates updated with the latest California standards.
California's Pacific environment demands marine-grade materials that withstand intense UV, saltwater, and coastal fog. Our decals are spec'd specifically for California waters.
CDFW requires registration numbers to contrast clearly with the hull surface. Dark numbers on light hulls or light numbers on dark hulls are both accepted. High-visibility color combinations are recommended for Pacific coastal environments where glare is intense.
Our California decals are crafted from 3M and Avery Dennison marine-grade cast vinyl — the same material used on commercial fishing vessels throughout the Pacific Fleet.
California does not mandate reflective registration numbers, but CDFW approves their use. Reflective decals significantly improve night visibility and are strongly recommended for San Francisco Bay and SoCal harbors with high traffic.
California's coastal UV index and Pacific salt spray create extreme conditions that degrade standard vinyl within 2–3 years. Our California-spec decals are engineered to exceed a 7-year service life in these environments.
Incorrect placement is one of the most common CDFW citation causes in California. Our decals include a placement guide specific to your vessel type — bow, cabin, or cuddy.
California law requires the registration number to be displayed on both the port (left) and starboard (right) sides of the forward half of the hull. Numbers must be clearly legible from either side when the vessel is underway.
The bottom of the registration number characters must be positioned at least 12 inches above the waterline when the vessel is at rest with a normal load. This ensures the numbers remain visible and unobstructed by water spray.
Numbers must appear in the forward half of the vessel — typically on the bow area. They must not be placed on or near the stern. The forward-half requirement ensures enforcement officers can identify the vessel approaching from any angle.
For cabin cruisers and cuddy boats where the forward hull is occupied by cabin structure, placement on the cabin sides is permitted provided the numbers are still in the forward half of the vessel and maintain the minimum 3-inch height requirement.
Proper installation in California's extreme coastal environment requires specific prep, adhesive temperature awareness, and curing protocols. Follow these guidelines for a 7+ year lifespan.
California's desert-adjacent coastline — from San Diego to Monterey — can push hull surface temperatures above 160°F in direct sun. Our marine-grade vinyl and adhesive system remains dimensionally stable up to 200°F, preventing bubbling, edge lift, and color shift during peak summer.
Pacific Ocean salt concentration is significantly higher than the Gulf or Atlantic. Our adhesive is formulated specifically for high-salinity environments, rated for continuous salt-spray exposure per ASTM B117 (500-hour salt-spray certification). Decals stay bonded through heavy Pacific swells and wake spray.
Northern California's marine layer brings persistent moisture that penetrates standard adhesives. Our hydrophobic laminate and waterproof adhesive create a moisture-tight bond that resists the repeated wet-dry cycles common from Crescent City to Half Moon Bay.
We use pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive rated for marine applications — compatible with fiberglass, aluminum, painted steel, polyethylene, and gel coat. The adhesive cures in 72 hours at California ambient temperatures and achieves full bond strength within 7 days. Application in temperatures between 50°F–90°F recommended.
Clean hull with isopropyl alcohol (99%) — remove all wax, salt residue, and oxidation
Ensure surface temperature is between 50–90°F — avoid direct midday California sun
Measure and mark placement points on both hull sides before peeling backing
Apply decal from center outward using a plastic squeegee to eliminate air pockets
Apply firm pressure along all edges — especially at character endpoints
Allow 72-hour cure before first launch — 7 days before pressure washing
All plans include CDFW format verification, both hull sides, and free shipping within California on orders over $35.

From San Francisco Bay to San Diego Harbor — California boaters choose our decals for CDFW compliance and coast-proven durability.
"SF Bay patrol is strict — they'll pull you over for any compliance issue. Got these decals before our first season and they've held up perfectly through two winters of Bay Area fog and rain. CDFW officer checked us last summer and gave us an all-clear. Quality you can trust in tough conditions."
"Southern California sun is brutal on decals. Had a cheaper set from another supplier that faded and cracked within one season. These marine-grade ones are still bright and crisp after three years in the Marina del Rey sun. The UV rating on these is no joke. Highly recommend."
"We take our boat out on Humboldt Bay where the conditions are harsh — salt spray, constant wind, fog year-round. These decals haven't budged in 18 months. The adhesive is serious stuff. Ordered the reflective option too for our night fishing runs. Perfect visibility."
"Tahoe has its own unique conditions — high altitude UV, cold water, and summer heat swings. The decals have been on since last spring and look factory-fresh. The customer service team helped me confirm CDFW placement requirements for my specific hull layout. Super helpful. Will order again."
"We run a commercial sportfishing charter, so our vessel needs both CDFW and USCG documentation numbers. The team helped us spec both sets and shipped them on the same order. The CF registration numbers are in full compliance — our Coast Guard inspection last season was clean. Zero issues."
