DNR-approved registration number decals built to Georgia's exact specifications. Whether you're boating on Lake Lanier, Lake Allatoona, or along the Georgia coast — stay fully compliant and on the water.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) sets strict standards for boat registration number format, size, and application. Our decals are engineered to meet every specification — so you never fail an inspection.
Georgia registration numbers must begin with the state prefix 'GA', followed by exactly 4 Arabic numerals, then a suffix of 2 letters — for example: GA 1234 AB. The prefix 'GA', the numerals, and the letter suffix must each be separated by a hyphen or a space of the same width as a letter.
Format: GA + 4 digits + 2 letters (e.g., GA 1234 AB)Per Georgia DNR regulations, each character (letter and number) must be at minimum 3 inches (76mm) in height. Characters must be of block style — no script, italic, or decorative fonts are permitted, as they reduce legibility at distance during enforcement stops.
Minimum 3 inches tall, block-style onlyCharacters must have a stroke width (line thickness) of at least ½ inch (12.7mm). Letter-spacing between individual characters must be no less than ¾ inch (19mm), and the separation between the state prefix, number group, and letter suffix must be at least equal to the width of one character.
Min. ½" stroke width; ¾" character spacingNumbers may be painted directly on the hull or applied as decals. If using decals, the vinyl must be permanently affixed — not easily removable or temporary. Our pressure-sensitive vinyl decals meet this requirement and are engineered to bond permanently to fiberglass, aluminum, and gel-coat surfaces.

Georgia law specifies color contrast standards to ensure registration numbers are clearly readable by DNR officers and other boaters. Here's what you need to know about color selection and approved materials.
Georgia DNR mandates that registration numbers must be in a color that sharply contrasts with the hull color. If the hull is dark (navy, black, dark blue, forest green), use white or bright yellow characters. If the hull is light (white, cream, silver), use black, dark blue, or dark red characters.
Approved color pairings include: Black on white, white on black, black on silver/gray, white on dark blue, black on yellow, and white on red. Two-tone decals with a contrasting outline are also acceptable under Georgia regulations and can aid visibility on mid-tone hulls.
Our registration decals are made from 3M™ and Avery™ marine-grade cast vinyl rated for 7+ years of outdoor exposure. The ink is UV-stabilized and chemically resistant to fuel, bilge water, salt spray, and common hull cleaning agents. The adhesive is marine-formulated for permanent bonding to fiberglass, aluminum, and painted surfaces.
While Georgia DNR does not currently mandate reflective registration numbers, reflective or high-visibility materials are strongly recommended for boats operated at dusk, dawn, or in low-visibility conditions on Georgia's busy lake systems. We offer reflective upgrades on all Georgia registration number orders.

Correctly positioning your Georgia registration numbers is just as important as their format. Improper placement can result in a warning or citation during a DNR waterway inspection — even if the numbers themselves are formatted correctly.
Georgia DNR requires registration numbers to appear on BOTH the port (left) and starboard (right) sides of the forward half of the hull. Numbers on each side must be identical and displayed so they can be read from left to right.
Numbers must be placed in the forward (front) half of the vessel — typically on the bow section. They must not be obscured by equipment, ropes, fenders, canvas covers, or other items when the vessel is underway.
While Georgia DNR does not specify a minimum distance from the waterline, numbers should be placed as high as practical on the hull to remain visible when the boat is loaded. Numbers regularly submerged or difficult to read during normal operation are considered non-compliant.
For cabin cruisers or vessels where the hull's forward area is not suitable, numbers may be placed on the forward-facing section of the cabin structure. Transom placement is NOT accepted as a substitute for the hull-side placement under Georgia law.

Georgia's mix of freshwater lakes, tidal rivers, and coastal salt water demands decals that hold up to real-world conditions. Here's how to install and maintain your registration numbers for lasting compliance across every Georgia waterway.
Georgia's climate delivers intense UV exposure across all seasons, especially in South Georgia and along the coast. Our vinyl is UV-stabilized with outdoor-rated inks that resist fading, chalking, and cracking for 7+ years — even on boats stored outdoors or used year-round on sun-drenched lakes like Hartwell or Seminole.
Georgia's most popular boating destinations — Lake Lanier, Allatoona, Oconee, and Chatuge — present freshwater challenges including tannin-stained water, algae growth, and mineral deposits from hard water. Our cast vinyl won't lift, bubble, or lose adhesion when repeatedly submerged, and the smooth gloss surface resists algae buildup between cleanings.
Georgia's Golden Isles, Savannah River, and Altamaha River salt environments demand exceptional corrosion and salt-spray resistance. Our marine-grade adhesive and topcoat are specifically formulated to withstand salt crystal accumulation, tidal fluctuations, and biofouling — keeping your registration numbers clean and legible through the entire boating season.
Georgia's high humidity can affect adhesion if not managed during installation. Apply decals when the hull surface is between 50°F–90°F, and ensure the hull is completely dry and clean. Use isopropyl alcohol (70%+) to degrease the surface before applying. Allow 24–48 hours after installation before immersing the vessel to allow full adhesive cure.

"We do a lot of boating in the coastal waters around Jekyll Island and St. Simons. Salt and sun are brutal on anything that goes on a hull. These registration decals have held up perfectly through two full seasons — no peeling, no fading. Very impressed with the quality."
Candace Whitfield
"Ordered black-on-white numbers for my white aluminum fishing boat and they look great. The 3-inch character size is perfect — easy to read at distance. The website made it simple to enter my GA number and get exactly what I needed for DNR compliance."
Darrell Summers
"I transferred ownership of my pontoon and needed new registration decals quickly for the Savannah River. Ordered Monday, applied them Wednesday. The application process was easy with the squeegee included, and the decals went on perfectly without bubbles."
Monica Tran
"Lake Hartwell has a lot of boat traffic and DNR patrols regularly. These decals passed my first inspection without any issues — the officer actually commented that they were very clean and legible. Will definitely be a repeat customer."
