Michigan DNR Registration Format & Requirements

Michigan's Department of Natural Resources mandates specific format, size, and placement rules for all boat registration numbers displayed on vessels operating in state waters — including the Great Lakes.

Registration Number Format

Michigan registration numbers follow the format "MI XXXXXX X" — the letters "MI", followed by up to six digits, then a letter suffix. Your numbers must appear exactly as issued by the Michigan Secretary of State or DNR.

Minimum Letter Height

All characters must be at least 3 inches tall for standard recreational vessels. Great Lakes vessels and larger watercraft (over 16 ft) typically need 3-inch characters, consistent with federal and state standards.

Block Letters Required

Letters and numbers must be in plain, vertical block letter style — no script, italics, or decorative fonts. Characters must contrast with the hull color and be easily legible from a distance.

Validation Decals

Michigan registration validation stickers (annual tabs) must be affixed immediately forward of the registration number on the port (left) side only.

Registered Vessel Classes

All motorized vessels and sailboats over 12 feet in length operating on Michigan waters — including all five Great Lakes, inland lakes, and rivers — must display a valid registration number.

Size Standards for Great Lakes Vessels

Vessels operating on Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario must meet the same 3-inch minimum character height required by federal law for vessels operating on international waters. All our standard Michigan sets are manufactured at 3 inches by default, with optional 4-inch sets available for larger craft.

Built for Michigan

Cold Water, Ice & Great Lakes Durability

Michigan's climate is among the most demanding in the country for boat decals. Our registration numbers are engineered specifically for cold-water fresh lakes, Great Lakes wave action, and harsh winter storage conditions.

Cold-Water & Ice Exposure

Michigan winters are brutal. Our 3M cast vinyl remains pliable and adhesion-strong down to -40°F — it won't crack, peel, or delaminate through freeze-thaw cycles that destroy budget alternatives.

Winter Salt Treatment Resistant

Michigan roads and boat ramps use heavy salt and brine during winter. Our decals use a chemical-resistant laminate that repels salt, road brine, and de-icers without fading or adhesive failure.

Great Lakes UV Resistance

The Great Lakes reflect intense UV in summer months. Our outdoor-rated vinyl includes UV inhibitors with a 7+ year outdoor lifespan rating — colors stay vivid, not chalky or bleached.

Fresh Water & Great Lakes Rated

Whether you're on Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, or an inland trout lake, our vinyl is 100% waterproof with a marine-grade adhesive designed for constant wet-dry cycles.

Customization

Colors, Sizes & Placement Options

Customize your Michigan registration numbers within DNR-compliant parameters. Our online builder enforces the rules automatically — you can't accidentally create a non-compliant set.

Custom MI Format

We pre-format your number in the Michigan "MI XXXXXX X" block-letter style. Enter your number, pick your size, and the layout is done for you — DNR-compliant from the start.

Color & Contrast Options

Choose from black, white, red, blue, gold, silver, and more. Michigan DNR requires high contrast with the hull — our color guide shows compliant combinations at a glance.

Size Options

Standard 3-inch sets for most vessels; 4-inch for larger Great Lakes boats. All sizes include the required spacing between MI prefix, registration digits, and suffix letter.

Reflective Vinyl Available

DNR-approved reflective vinyl for enhanced night visibility on Michigan waters. Ideal for low-light Great Lakes conditions and required by some vessel classes.

Port & Starboard Pairs

Every order ships as a matched pair — one for the port (left) side, one for the starboard (right) side — so both sides of your hull are correctly equipped per MI placement rules.

Single-Line or Stacked Format

Longer Michigan registration numbers can be displayed in a single horizontal line or stacked format to accommodate narrower bow sections without breaking DNR placement rules.

Color & Reflectivity for Fresh Water & Great Lakes

Michigan DNR requires that registration numbers contrast clearly with the hull. For white or light hulls, use black or dark colors. For dark hulls, use white or a light color. Reflective variants add an extra layer of safety for night-time Great Lakes navigation.
